The Theta Girl, a new indie gore thriller, is hitting film festivals this Winter

THE THETA GIRL, a new independent micro-budget gore thriller, ravages festival circuit this Winter

The Theta Girl, a feature film produced by first-time filmmakers David Axe and Christopher Bickel, is coming to film circuits this Winter.

The film had its world-premiere in Atlanta on Friday the 13th of October at midnight -- a fitting time slot for opening what director Christopher Bickel calls "a brutally violent existential horror film." At the Atlanta screening, several audience members walked out of the film following one shocking scene depicting a violent home invasion. The audience members who remained were very vocal and enthusiastic about their enjoyment and appreciation of the film, one audience member writing in a comment online: "Holy sh*t! Talk about a low-budget MASTERPIECE. A gory drug-induced mystery! A psychedelic B Movie thriller! Roger Corman-esque Punk cinema that's WAY better and smarter than it should be! A++++++"

The Theta Girl was produced on a shoestring budget of $14,000. To put that budget into perspective, the film could have been made 3,571 times over for what it cost Hollywood to make one Emoji Movie. It is the first film for Axe and Bickel, and indeed it was the first film for the majority of cast and crew. Though the film exhibits some rough edges as a result of its extremely low budget and the experience level of the creators, it has been enthusiastically praised for its high entertainment value, thoughtful existential themes, and shocking content.

The film has already received accolades from critics. One critic gushing "not only is it possibly the best independent film of 2017 but possibly one of the best examples of low budget filmmaking EVER!" (full review HERE)

Venerated Indie Film magazine Film Threat gave The Theta Girl high marks calling it "edgy, thoughtful, quality entertainment." (full review HERE)

Billed as an "existenploitation film," The Theta Girl follows the trials and tribulations of young drug-dealer, Gayce Delko, and the hallucinogen she peddles. "Theta" was a "fun drug" -- a drug that blew people's minds. Theta was supposed to be a door to Heaven, but when her best friends get methodically and brutally murdered, Gayce realizes theta might also be a door to Hell -- and it's up to her to shut it. The film's tagline is "She brought the pills. He brought the kills."

Bickel describes The Theta Girl as "an exercise in sex, drugs, punk rock, brutality, gore, revenge, and self-actualization... but really it's an art film."

The Theta Girl was written by David Axe and directed by Christopher Bickel, who also shot, edited, and provided sound-design for the film. Axe and Bickel also served as the film's producers under the "Barron Perter Productions" moniker. The film stars Victoria Elizabeth as "Gayce," Shane Silman as "Brother Marcus," and Darrelle D. Dove as "Derek."

The film has not been rated by the MPAA, but it contains nudity, drug use, adult themes, and extremely graphic violence.

"You'll be exhausted or exhilarated, turned off or turned on, but you won't be bored. If your assaulted senses recover by the time the final credits roll, you may even swell with admiration"
-- Rodney Welch, Free Times

"The Theta Girl raises the bar on the modern indie film"
-- Dave Koenig, Fiendish Magazine

"Raw, unflinching and unapologetic"
-- Cherry Bombed, Dangerous Minds

"Possibly the best independent film of 2017 but possible one of the best examples of low budget filmmaking EVER!"
-- Zeda Muller, Medallion Films

"This film explodes onto the screen like the lovechild of Ted V. Mikels and Jodorowsky, skull-fucks you like a tag team of Blue Sunshine and Blood Feast, and when it's done you will say, "Thank you, may I have another.""
- Psycho Drive-In

"Far, far better than it has any right to be... This is the kind of movie that microbudget indie producers should be studying to up their filmmaking game."
-- The Slaughtered Bird

The film is written by David Axe, journalist and editor of the website War Is Boring. The film is directed by Christopher Bickel, former Maximum RocknRoll writer, current staff writer at Dangerous Minds, and curator of the "First Friday Lowbrow Cinema Explosion" series at The Nickelodeon. The two produced the film with their own money and money raised via a successful crowd-funding campaign.

Ed Wood's "The Violent Years" new 4k transfer from AGFA

Alamo Drafthouse's American Genre Film Archive and Something Weird
announce brand new 4k transfer of Ed Wood's THE VIOLENT YEARS

Coming to Blu-ray on November 21st

Alamo Drafthouse's American Genre Film Archive, the largest non-profit genre film archive in the world, and Something Weird are excited to announce an November 21st release of THE VIOLENT YEARS on Blu-ray. After a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2015, AGFA purchased a 4K film scanner to create new digital transfers of titles from the Something Weird library. THE VIOLENT YEARS is the third release of dozens in this partnership, following THE ZODIAC KILLER and BAT PUSSY.

Written by legendary Hollywood outsider Edward D. Wood, Jr. (PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE, GLEN OR GLENDA), THE VIOLENT YEARS is the story of Paula Parkins (Jean Moorehead), a good-girl-gone-bad who leads her degenerate teenage hellcats down a path of gas station hijackings, pajama party orgies, and cold-blooded murder! From Wood's patently deranged dialogue to the scene where the gang performs a "man attack," THE VIOLENT YEARS is an essential exposé on crime, gender politics, and sweater-stealing. Remember, "This is a story of violence!"

"Ed Wood's influence is woven into our DNA," said AGFA director Joe Ziemba. "We're honored to help the world reassess his importance as a ground-breaking queer filmmaker through our release of THE VIOLENT YEARS with Something Weird. Wherever he is, we hope Ed is smiling."

Special features include:
- New 4K scan from the original camera negative!
- Commentary track with filmmaker Frank Henenlotter (BASKET CASE, FRANKENHOOKER) and Ed Wood biographer Rudolph Grey!
- Gutter-noir trailers from the Something Weird vault!
- Memorabilia scrapbook!
- Bonus movie: ANATOMY OF A PSYCHO (1961), a new 2K scan from an original theatrical print
- Reversible cover art

D.O.A.: A Right Of Passage coming to Theaters and Blu-ray + DVD

D.O.A.: A Right Of Passage

coming to Theaters in November and Blu-ray + DVD December 8

Brand-new HD transfer of classic punk rockumentary following the
Sex Pistols 1978 tour... Available for the first time.
"D.O.A. is as much of a Woodstock as punk may ever inspire."
- The New York Times

"D.O.A. features state-of-the-art performances...
Still, it's the eerie Spungen-Vicious dialogue that will probably haunt most viewers."
- Rolling Stone

D.O.A.: A Right Of Passage is the ground-breaking classic rockumentary about the origin of punk rock. The film will be coming to select theaters in mid-November, and will also be available in a collector's edition Blu-ray + DVD package.

"High Times is pleased to finally uncover and restore this extraordinary, vintage film - D.O.A.," said High Times owner and CEO Adam Levin.

The vision for the film can be attributed to two people: Tom Forcade (the founder of High Times magazine) and filmmaker Lech Kowalski (East of Paradise). The production centered around the Sex Pistols 1978 tour of the US, which ended with the group breaking up. Forcade and Kowalski followed the band with handheld cameras through the clubs and bars during their seven-city U.S. tour.

Mixing this with footage of other contemporary bands, trends in the fashion capitals and punks of all shapes and colors, the film makers captured a grainy, stained snapshot of the punk movement at its peak (which includes the now famous footage of Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen in bed) along with rare interview and concert footage of the late seventies punk rock music scene.

As John Holmstrom, Founding Editor of PUNK Magazine, writes in his liner notes:
"D.O.A., the original 1950 film noir and A Rite of Passage's namesake, was about a dead man walking who wanted to get revenge on his killers. This aptly describes D.O.A.: A Rite of Passage, which was made by a man who killed himself a few months later, who wanted to get revenge on his tormentors: corporate and government control of rock music and youth culture."

With live performances by the Sex Pistols, The Dead Boys, Generation X (with Billy Idol), The Rich Kids, the X-Ray Spex, and Sham 69, along with additional music from The Clash, Iggy Pop, this iconic documentary is now available for the first time ever on disc!

Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers' classic 1977 "L.A.M.F." album performed by members of Blondie, MC5, Replacements & Heartbreakers

Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers' classic 1977 "L.A.M.F." album performed by members of
Blondie, MC5, Replacements & Heartbreakers

Coming to DVD and CD on December 8th

"Arguably the best album to come out of the original wave of punk rock"
- Joe Whyte, Louder Than War

Sole surviving Heartbreaker Walter Lure was joined by Blondie's Clem Burke, The Replacements' Tommy Stinson and MC5's Wayne Kramer over two nights at New York City's 'Bowery Electric' club in November 2016, and the event captured for posterity. Also joining them on stage were guests including Jesse Malin of D-Generate, Liza Colby, and the Dead Boys' Cheetah Chrome. The DVD features bonus material of interviews with all four band-members along with Jesse Malin.

L.A.M.F. is the album recorded by Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers in punk-era London, after they accompanied the Sex Pistols, Damned & Clash on the aborted 'Anarchy Tour'. Being ex-members of the New York Dolls they were lauded by the young punks, and went on to record the high-octane rock'n'roll album, in retrospect labelled as a classic:

This live DVD, colored vinyl LP and CD follows on from the remastered 40th anniversary edition of L.A.M.F. and the reissue of an extended Definitive Edition 4CD box set (and triple-vinyl) of the albums many mixes and demos. See recent feature in MOJO.

The release coincides with Walter Lure taking his L.A.M.F. show on out the road again - this time with the Sex Pistols' Glen Matlock on bass, Social Distortion's Mike Ness on guitar & vocals, and again Blondie's Clem Burke on drums. They play six dates starting at the end of November 2017 covering US east and west coasts, with gigs in Los Angeles, San Diego, Brooklyn and New York.

All versions of L.A.M.F. are available at MVDshop.com

Lot18 & AMC Launch New "The Walking Dead" Wine Collection

Lot18 & AMC Launch New "The Walking Dead" Wine Collection

Wine lovers and fans of the worldwide hit television series "The Walking Dead" can now order "The Walking Dead" Wine Collection from Lot18 in partnership with AMC. Perfect for your weekly viewing parties or for any occasion, the limited-edition collection features three hand-crafted blends and uniquely designed labels to honor the essence of characters from the series which is currently in its 8th season.

With a limited number of each specially created bottle available, these delicious wines can be purchased exclusively at Lot18.com/TheWalkingDead while supplies last.  Just in time for the highly anticipated new season of "The Walking Dead", the sale will go live on Monday, November 6 at 8am ET. The individually selected wines were carefully crafted by the team at Lot18 to highlight their shared characteristics with the beloved characters Rick Grimes, Daryl Dixon, and the villainous Negan.

The inspiration behind the wines are as follows:

Rick Grimes - 2016 California Petite Sirah
Whether he's fighting off a herd of walkers or rallying communities to defend against the Saviors, Rick Grimes is undoubtedly the leader of the group, just as this Petite Sirah would command the attention of anyone who tastes it. Like Rick, this red is a true crowd pleaser - bold, dark and balanced, exhibiting a notable tension between the bright acidity and firm, tannic structure. You'll realize with just one sip that his is a wine that'll never let you down.

Daryl Dixon - 2016 California Cabernet Sauvignon
Resourceful, fearless and capable of handling both the dead and the living, Daryl Dixon is a loner man of few words, but his loyalty to the group is immediately apparent to anyone he encounters. This California Cabernet Sauvignon is similarly reliable, showing depth and an attractive core of ripe black fruits, intermingled with savory nuances of coffee bean and dried herbs. Like Daryl's crossbow, this is a wine you can count on to always hit the mark.

Negan - California Bourbon Barrel Red Blend
Negan is the man we all love to hate, but you have to respect his uncompromising style. This red blend is also brawny and bold, creating devotees with its robust, extracted flavors of vanilla, dark chocolate and caramel. A portion of the wine was bourbon barrel aged for three months. Composed of 73% Merlots, 18% Zinfandel and 9% Petite Sirah, this is a wine that packs a punch harder than Lucille's, compelling you through the apocalypse and beyond.

Based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman and published by Image Comics, "The Walking Dead" reigns as television's most watched drama for adults 18-49. "The Walking Dead" tells the story of the months and years that follow a zombie apocalypse, and follows a group of survivors, led by police officer Rick Grimes, who travel in search of a safe and secure home.  The series is executive produced by showrunner Scott M. Gimple, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, David Alpert, Greg Nicotero and Tom Luse. "The Walking Dead" is currently in its eighth season airing Sunday nights on AMC.

Billy Idol, Rebel Yell and Idolize Yourself: The Very Best of Billy Idol to be re-released November 3rd on high quality vinyl

UMe and punk rock icon Billy Idol celebrate several of his best-loved works with newly remastered vinyl reissues of Idol’s first two solo LPs, Billy Idol and Rebel Yell, plus the expansive double-LP greatest-hits collection Idolize Yourself: The Very Best of Billy Idol. Each release is available beginning November 3rd on high-quality vinyl with faithfully reproduced iconic original album art.

Billy Idol’s series of successes in the early 1980s brought punk attitude into the pop mainstream.  With a career that stretched back to the original British punk scene as the front-man of scene trailblazers Generation X, the swaggering, charismatic Idol relocated to New York City at the dawn of the '80s and reinvented himself as one of the era's most consistently popular performers.

Billy Idol, originally released on July 16, 1982, introduced Idol to mainstream American audiences and succeeded in launching his solo career. Teaming Idol with producer Keith Forsey and longtime guitarist/collaborator Steve Stevens, Billy Idol introduced a sleek, streamlined sound and includes hits such as "White Wedding," and "Hot in the City.”

Originally released on November 10, 1983, the multi-platinum smash Rebel Yell built on the foundation created by its predecessor and features Idol advancing and evolving his dance infused rock/pop sound. Once again working with Stevens and Forsey, with recording done at New York's Electric Lady Studios, Rebel Yell was a commercial smash featuring songs including the legendary title track, "Eyes Without a Face," and "Flesh for Fantasy.” Each of these hits are represented by iconic music videos that kept Idol in the public eye during the initial heyday of MTV.

While Billy Idol and Rebel Yell flash back to Idol's formative days as a solo performer, Idolize Yourself: The Very Best of Billy Idol offers a widescreen overview of his entire storied recording career.  First issued on CD in 2008, the 18-song Idolize Yourself features all of Idol's vintage hits including his early club smashes "Dancing with Myself" and "Mony Mony," plus “Cradle of Love,” “Rebel Yell,” “White Wedding,” “Eyes Without A Face,” “Flesh For Fantasy,” “Sweet Sixteen,” “To Be A Lover,” and more. The record concludes with two songs newly recorded just for this collection’s initial release: "John Wayne" and “New Future Weapon."

Each of Billy Idol’s recordings retain their original power. despite many of them having been released over thirty years ago. There is no better way to hear them than on these classic albums, newly released on high-quality vinyl.

Newly Restored in 2K, Film Movement Releases Romy Schneider's Classic SISSI COLLECTION on Blu-Ray for the Very First Time on 11/14!

"Glittering Splendor...Schneider is a sight to behold."
-- The New York Times

Romy Schneider Vaulted to International Stardom in Her Career
Defining Role as the Beloved Austrian Princess; Every Timeless Sissi Film
is Collected in this 5-Disc Set, Perfect for the Whole Family and
Available on November 14, 2017 Extras Include a Bonus Disc featuring "Forever My Love" (1962), a Condensed English-Dubbed Version of the Trilogy, a "Making of" Featurette and a 20-page Collector's Booklet

At the age of seventeen, Romy Schneider vaulted to international stardom through her portrayal of Princess Elisabeth (Sissi) of Austria in the first of three lavish films directed by Ernst Marischka.  And, while she would go on to work with some of the most influential and daring European directors of the era, Schneider will always be remembered by this defining role in the internationally beloved series.  Newly restored in 2K and available for the first time ever on Blu-ray in North America, THE SISSI COLLECTION, priced at $74.95srp, includes the Cannes Golden Palm-Nominated "Sissi Trilogy" along with VICTORIA IN DOVER (1954), a precursor to the Sissi films in which Schneider plays Britain's Princess Victoria.

In SISSI, the title tale from 1955, viewers embraced the 16 year-old Sissi as she traveled with her mother to the Austrian court in Ischl, where the engagement between her sister Helene and the young emperor Franz Josef (Karl Boehm) was to be announced.  Unfortunately for Helene, he falls for Sissi after meeting her while out fishing.  Sissi is also romantically engaged, but marriage comes with a price -- Archduchess Sophie, his arrogant and headstrong mother!  The sequel, SISSI: THE YOUNG EMPRESS (1956) follows the magnificent imperial wedding in Vienna and finds Sissi settling down to everyday life as empress.  Unfortunately, the strong-willed Sissi and her domineering mother-in-law cannot see eye to eye, and the conflict is heightened with the birth of a daughter.  Ultimately, a truce is brokered and the young couple head from Hungary where they are crowned King and Queen.  In the final film in the beloved trilogy, SISSI: THE FATEFUL YEARS OF THE EMPRESS(1957), Sissi has proven her ability to not only handle affairs of state but also her mother-in-law.  But as the Queen travels to Hungary in an effort to calm the insubordinate nobility, Archduchess Sophie again causes trouble for her daughter-in-law.

All of the remastered films in "The Sissi Trilogy" are presented in both 16:9 widescreen and the original theatrical full screen aspect ratios.

FOREVER MY LOVE (1962) --  The beloved "Sissi Trilogy" presented in a condensed English-dubbed version, originally released by Paramount Pictures in the U.S. and featuring a theme song written by Burt Bacharach.

AFTERIMAGE, Legendary Director Andrzej Wajda's Powerful Final Film and Poland's Submission for Best Foreign Language Film, Will Now Arrive on BD+DVD on 11/7

"Angry, vivid, passionate."
-Glenn Kenny, The New York Times

"Triumphant... one of the year's best pictures."
-John Fink, The Film Stage

Called "a Fitting Coda for Wajda's Career[1]" This Powerful Biopic --
a New York Times Critic's Pick -- arrives on Blu-ray + DVD Combo on
NOVEMBER 7, 2017; Bonus Features Include the Feature-Length HD Documentary "Wajda by Wajda" and Commentary by History/Theory
of Cinema Professor Emeritus Stuart Liebman

AFTERIMAGE, legendary director Andrzej Wajda's final film, is a passionate portrait of renowned avant-garde painter, Władysław Strzemiński, who challenged Stalinist orthodoxy.  On October 24, Film Movement will release this powerful biopic -- Poland's Official Submission for Best Foreign Language Film at this past year's Academy Awards -- as a Blu-ray + DVD combo for $39.95.

Looking at the last years of the controversial and visionary artists' life, AFTERIMAGE follows Poland's best-known interwar artist and theoretician as he wages war against Stalinism.  Though he didn't start painting until after becoming a double amputee, the ever-compelling and charismatic Strzemiński eventually became a professor at the National School of Fine Arts in Lodz.  It's there that students treat him like the "messiah of modern painting," but university authorities and the Ministry of Culture have a differing opinion.  Refusing to comply with Party regulations, the rebellious artist is eventually expelled from the university and the artists' union. And as the Communist authorities continue their efforts to ruin him, Strzemiński, brilliantly played by Polish superstar Boguslaw Linda, remains steadfast in his political and artistic convictions.

Called "a fitting capstone[2]" to the career of Wajda and "a strong story from a cinematic master[3]," Dan Fainaru of Screen Daily also called AFTERIMAGE "an essential addition to the tragic cultural history of the communist era in Eastern Europe and the disasters wrecked by this totalitarian rule."

The feature-length HD documentary "Wajda by Wadja" (95 mins.) - The filmmaker offers a unique perspective on his work and provides us with the keys to understanding it shortly before his death.

Lydia Loveless Doc and RSD Vinyl

"Who Is Lydia Loveless"on DVD November 24th

Proof positive the future of rock & roll is alive and well in a brilliant 5-foot tall spitfire from Columbus, Ohio

Lydia Loveless documentary and limited-edition live vinyl-only EP
from Color Me Obsessed director Gorman Bechard

Filmmaker Gorman Bechard, who has chronicled three of the most influential bands in the history of rock and roll with documentaries about The Replacements, Archers of Loaf, and Hüsker Dü's Grant Hart is turning his camera towards the future with his new film, Who is Lydia Loveless?

The feature-length documentary follows Lydia Loveless and her band into the studio as they record their album Real. Along with a chaotic super-charged home-town live performance shot specifically for the film and extensive interviews with Loveless and her band, the rock-doc will delve into the realities, financial and otherwise, of a working musician on the brink of major success. It will examine what it's like to be a woman in the mostly sexist rock & roll world, dealing with cellphones in your face as you sing a heartbreaking tune, piracy, streaming services, and of course answer the question: Who Is Lydia Loveless?

"Lydia is the future of rock and roll," director Bechard explains. "She straps you onto an emotional roller coaster of love, lust, drunken mistakes, a little stalking, a lot of heartbreak, an you're left breathless, stunned, happy to have taken the ride."

Music journalists from SPIN to Rolling Stone have likewise raved, with her albums always finding their way onto many year-end Best Album lists.

"I'm excited to work with Gorman," says Loveless. "He's very passionate about music and about the true meaning and spirit of rock and roll."

The vinyl release, Live From the Documentary Who is Lydia Loveless?, is an exclusive Record Store Day release featuring 6 tracks recorded at a hometown performance in Columbus, Ohio.

Bechard's three previous music docs have all won critical praise. Rolling Stone called Color Me Obsessed, A Film About The Replacements one of "The Seven Best New Music Documentaries of the Year."

The Seattle Times raved about the "raw power and mesmerizing hooks" in his Archers of Loaf concert film What Did You Expect? While Every Everything: The Music, Life & Times Of Grant Hart was labeled "beautifully sad" by The Village Voice.

He is currently in post production on documentaries about Wilco's Jay Bennett, as well as newly-signed Bloodshot Records recording artist Sarah Shook and the Disarmers. Bechard is also the filmmaker behind the ASPCA-award-winning animal welfare documentary A Dog Named Gucci.

Who is Lydia Loveless? will be released on an extra-filled DVD and streaming services from MVD Entertainment Group on Friday, November 24th, 2017. Live From the Documentary Who is Lydia Loveless? (which includes a copy of the DVD) will be available as a Record Store Day exclusive on that same day.

About Streetlight Harmonies:

It’s the unmistakable falsetto leads, lilting harmonies and deep backing vocals set to a bluesy street corner rhythm that created those unmistakable sounds “Up On The Roof” (The Drifters), Tears On My Pillow (Little Anthony & The Imperials), Smoke Gets In Your Eyes (The Platters), and “Why Do Fools Fall in Love” (The Teenagers) all an endless jukebox of melodies and memories. "All Day Thumbsucker Revisited: The History Of Blue Thumb Records" Revived On Eve Of Legendary Label's 50th Anniversary

From 1968 to 1978, Blue Thumb Records was one of music's most adventurous and imaginative record labels, with a far-ranging roster of cutting-edge acts and an unconventional visual sensibility. Nurturing an eclectic assortment of artists from a wide variety of genres, Blue Thumb embodied the restless creative spirit of the era in which it was born, reflecting the emerging attitude that albums were worthy of being taken seriously as artistic statements.

Blue Thumb's expansive musical vision was anthologized on the 1995 label retrospective All Day Thumbsucker Revisited. Today, October 27, Verve Records/UMe is releasing the long-out-of-print collection, originally compiled by Gary Katz, known for his work with Steely Dan, in an updated two-CD edition on the eve of next year’s 50th anniversary of Blue Thumb’s founding. The first in a projected series of releases to celebrate the revered label, the CD set offers 32 vintage tracks spread across two discs, while the digital edition, due November 10, marks the first time this collection will be available as a digital download and for streaming. In showcasing Blue Thumb's influential artist roster, the album also honors the iconoclastic musical vision of late label founders Bob Krasnow, who died on December 11, 2016, and Tommy LiPuma, who passed away on March 13, 2017. The album is available for purchase here: https://lnk.to/Thumbsucker2CD

Danny Bennett, President & CEO of Verve Label Group comments, “With the release of All Day Thumbsucker Revisited, we are so proud to honor Tommy LiPuma and Bob Krasnow by celebrating their Blue Thumb Records legacy and the incredible music they curated, all of which is well represented on this must-have collection.”

Blue Thumb Records' diverse artist roster included avant-garde hero Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band (whose rejected band name provided Blue Thumb's handle), Marc Bolan's Tyrannosaurus Rex, soul icons Ike and Tina Turner, hitmakers the Pointer Sisters, retro-swing hipsters Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks, venerable rockers Dave Mason and Leon Russell, psychedelic savants Love, boundary-pushing future star Sylvester, avant-jazz icon Sun Ra, rap progenitors the Last Poets, Gypsy jazz guitarist Gábor Szabó, spoken-word innovator Ken Nordine, British imports Mark-Almond and the Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation, jazz greats the Crusaders, Luis Gasca and Philip Upchurch, and blues legends Albert Collins, John Mayall, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells and Junior Mance—all of whom are featured on All Day Thumbsucker Revisited.

Along with 30 tracks from the original album, the 2017 edition of All Day Thumbsucker Revisited features two additional tracks by Buddy Guy and the Pointer Sisters. In addition to the above-mentioned artists, the album also includes a track by veteran pianist-journalist Ben Sidran, who also provided the original album's liner notes, which are reproduced here in their entirety.

Bob Krasnow had already been president of the King and Buddah/Kama Sutra labels when he formed Blue Thumb Records in 1968. Recruiting like-minded A&M Records producer Tommy LiPuma and A&M marketing executive Don Graham, Krasnow set out to build a record label that would reflect his own freewheeling sensibility as well as the increasing influence of album-oriented radio.

As Joe Sample of the Crusaders observed, "LiPuma and Krasnow were young and vibrant men with a tremendous love of music. And they also had the expertise to back up that love. And they started signing all kinds of bands. It was the new image in music, and I think it was the best kind of image that we ever had in the music business.

"There was a sense in the air of a lot of adventure," Sample notes. "The music business was making big, major changes; the newfound FM airwaves meant there was suddenly a whole new branch of radio stations that played music that would never be played on an AM station. Blue Thumb was one of the first companies that realized this new set of airwaves was important for music."

Commenting on Blue Thumb's early days, Sidran recalled, "They were running it, literally, out of three rooms. And they were making records that were consciously counter to what was going on. And nobody had done that... Krasnow was going out of his way to do something different."

That "something different" can be heard throughout All Day Thumbsucker Revisited, whose vintage grooves affirm the timeless brilliance of Blue Thumb's enduring musical vision.

Winter chills just mean that it's November, and Arrow Video are set to heat things up with a George Romero box set, a blaxploitation chiller, classic horror in steelbook form, a modern-day Russian black comedy, and a cult thriller directed by Steve Buscemi! With plenty of lavish packaging and limited edition items, Christmas has come early for film collectors!

Legendary horror cinema innovator, George A Romero, is responsible for arguably the most influential zombie films of all time. But he doesn't just make undead epics, and the three films collected here in the box set George Romero Between Night and Dawn - There's Always Vanilla, Season of the Witch and The Crazies - showcase the versatility and dynamism of this American auteur. As well as the films there are Romero interviews and documentaries and much more.

Next is the stunning debut of of the blaxploitation favorite JD's Revenge, a story about a man possessed by the spirit of a murderous gangster. Featuring Academy Award-winner Louis Gossett Jr (An Officer and a Gentleman), this is alternately tough and terrifying - a Blaxploitation gem waiting to be rediscovered.

Stephen King was once famously quoted as saying, "I have seen the future of horror...his name is Clive Barker." That future was realized in 1987 with the release of Barker's directorial debut Hellraiser. Introducing the world to the iconic Pinhead and his sadistic band of Cenobites, Hellraiser became an instant genre classic upon release and remains one of the most frighteningly original visions in horror. Now fans can own it in the form of an incredibly awesome steelbook with tons of extras.

The last of the Arrow Video titles for November is Animal Factory. Directed by Steve Buscemi, the film stars Willem Dafoe and Edward Furlong as they make their way through life inside a maximum security prison. This was Buscemi's second stint in the director's chair and sees him marshalling a formidable ensemble cast, for a powerful and sincere account of the men caught up in the penal system.

Finally, there is one release from Arrow Academy US - Zoology, an extraordinary film about a zoo worker who grows a tail, that proves that challenging, thought-provoking art house cinema is alive and well in the 21st century. In turns, disturbing, uplifting, and blackly comic, this is a challenging and irresistible contemporary fable, that deftly mixes the deadpan humour of Aki Kaurismäki with a poignant examination of social issues including loneliness and aging.

George Romero Between Night and Dawn Limited Edition [Dual Format] (11/14)

George Romero's name may be synonymous with the living dead subgenre, but his filmography is far richer and more varied than his reputation as "the zombie guy" would suggest. Following the breakout success of his debut feature Night of the Living Dead, the director would embark upon a series of projects which demonstrate a master filmmaker with more than mere gut-munching on his mind.

In There's Always Vanilla, young drifter Chris and beautiful model Lynn embark upon a tumultuous relationship which seems doomed from the outset. Season of the Witch (released theatrically as Hungry Wives) follows the exploits of Joan Mitchell - a housewife who seeks to escape the confines of her humdrum suburban existence through a flirtation with witchcraft. Lastly, The Crazies sees Romero returning to firmer horror territory as a small rural town finds itself in the grip of an infection which send its hosts into a violent, homicidal frenzy.

Taken together, these three films, made in the period between Romero's celebrated living dead outings Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, serve to shine a light on the broader thematic concerns and auteurist leanings of a skilled craftsman too often pigeonholed within the genre.

Inexperienced in the ways of prison life, he's taken under the wing of Earl Copen (Willem Dafoe, To Live and Die in LA), an experienced con with the entire prison in the palm of his hand - inmates and guards alike. But as Ron grows increasingly cocky in his privileged role as Earl's confidant, is he in danger of biting off more than he can chew with some of the jail's more volatile inhabitants?

Based on the semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by Eddie Bunker (Reservoir Dogs), Animal Factory was Steve Buscemi's (Lonesome Jim, Interview) second stint in the director's chair and sees him marshaling a formidable ensemble cast, including Bunker, Danny Trejo (Machete) and Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler), for a powerful and sincere account of the men caught up in the penal system and the deals they cut with each other, and themselves, in order to survive.

She lives with her God-fearing mother and leads a dull existence without prospects, until one day she grows a tail.
